“I believe there are angels among us. Sent down to us from somewhere up above. They come to you and me in our darkest hours to show us how to live, to teach us how to give to guide us with the light of love”
-Angels Among Us- Alabama
This past mothers day I was up in Connecticut, and I was grateful to be with my mom celebrating what mothers are about: love, loyalty, friendship.
The energy was a little bitter sweet as we were reminiscing and thinking about my sister Bonnie. Even though it was a windy cold day, we decided to drive by the beach, and spend time on the new bench my parents donated in her memory.
I was remembering all of the attributes of my sister. I was always so amazed by her sense of strength. She was not only physically strong, but she was one of the most resilient and spiritually strong people I’ve ever met.
She was fierce in how she approached getting things done. If she wanted a vacation, she found a way to take a trip using credit card points! She could figure anything out- she just knew how to make things happen. She pushed her boys in the most loving way and raised two amazing, good, sensitive, loving men. She instilled all the right lessons and an amazing foundation for both of them to have wonderful lives. She was a fantastic mother.
My mother gave me one of her sweaters. I’m wearing it today. It almost resembles a ski sweater with a band of colorful stripes on both shoulders that make me feel empowered, and that I have some of her grit with me.
Bonnie was famous for her dessert called “Death By Chocolate.” Which is a multi-layered chocolate trifle that includes chocolate cake, whipped cream, toffee candy, strawberries, and more. At her memorial, her best friend made it in her honor, but announced she had changed the name to “Layers of Love.” Life is all about layers of love, and layers of life.
We have to take the good with the bad. The love with the hurt. The joy with the pain.
It breaks my heart that my sister is no longer here to experience her sons’ new endeavors, relationships, and successes. But, I know in my heart that she is here and watching every step of the way. Acting as a guardian angel to us all.
We miss you.
We love you.
Happy Mother’s Day, everyday.
